„Joseph Schumpeter and his years in Bonn“, 11.12.2025

A 100 years ago, in the winter semester 1925/1926, Joseph Schumpeter became professor at the University of Bonn. He taught economics here at Bonn from 1925 to 1932, when he moved on to Harvard University.
He is one of the major economists of the 20th century.

He is known worldwide for the notion of „creative destruction“, a central idea for understanding processes of innovation and, thus, economic growth. Schumpeter also played a key role in strengthening the teaching of economics at Bonn at a crucial early point, at a time when quantitative approaches to economics were just finding their way into student curricula.

To celebrate the centenary of Schumpeter’s appointment to Bonn, the Department of Economics and the economics student council are co-organizing an event. Prof. Thomas Hintermaier will deliver a lecture entitled „Joseph Schumpeter and his years in Bonn“ on Thursday, 11 December.
